Written by Larry Dignan, Contributor

EMC said on Monday that it will acquire privately held Archer Technologies, a maker of governance, risk and compliance software.

The company said it will close the deal in the first quarter. The plan is to fold Archer's risk management software into EMC's RSA security division. Archer's software allows companies to visualise and manage risks to physical and virtualised environments.

Archer has more than six million licensed users and counts 25 of the Fortune 100 as customers, such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Procter & Gamble.
