Global mining leader, Rio Tinto has awarded a AU$20 million contract to Perth-based IT services company, Empired, to provide management for more than 170 of Rio Tinto's enterprise applications.

The contract is an initial three year deal, with two separate one year options, and will see Empired support a number of technologies and platforms, ranging from its existing legacy platforms, to Oracle, and applications built with Microsoft's .Net, SharePoint, and CRM.

Russell Baskerville, managing director of Empired said that Rio Tinto presents a great opportunity to the company.

"I am also pleased to see our extended Microsoft capability through the acquisitions of OBS, eSavvy, and Intergen leveraged to provide a seamless and cohesive solution to Rio Tinto.

"These acquisitions have been pivotal to our strategy and this win vindicates our strategy to leverage the broader capability to win large multi-year contracts."

In October last year, Empired announced a AU$12 million contract with the Ministry for Primary Industries in New Zealand.

Baskerville said that Empired is confident of securing additional contracts to announce in the future.
