Rugged Tablets PCs have a niche set of markets, but in those markets they perform vital jobs. The rugged nature of the devices means they can be taken into situations in which everyday machines would not survive. Environments which experience temperature extremes, places where the notebooks have to survive on bumpy roads and being thrown from place to place, and locations where water is a constant menace, for example.

The V100 has always been a tough machine. With its new set of updated specifications it is now a powerful one too.

The updated Getac V100 runs an Intel Core i7 processor, hard drive storage has been boosted to 320GB (with an SSD option), and RAM has risen to 8GB. These are the kinds of specifications you’ll find on top notch notebooks destined for the office, so it is good to see them being used on a rugged notebook.

The V100 has a range of other specifications which make it useful in a variety of situations. The screen is a 1200 NITS model capable of being read in bright sunlight. It has a light sensor so it will self adjust its brightness according to ambient light conditions. The screen is touch sensitive as well as stylus responsive, and it can be used by operatives wearing gloves as well as with the naked finger.

A magnesium alloy chassis gives lots of protection. The Getac V100 is certified to MIL-STD-810G and IP65, and ports and connectors are protected by tough rubberised covers so that you only need to reveal those you want to use at any one time. For all that ruggedness the Getac V100 weighs just 2.3Kg.

Connectivity options run to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi now upgraded to n, and 3G. TPM security is standard. It is possible to configure a 2 megapixel, water resistant, reversible webcam which allows users to video conference or show their interlocutor a different view without too much swivelling of the notebook itself. GPS can be built in too.

The V100 ships with a five year warranty.
