SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Representatives from 13 different companies and organizations took to the podium here Tuesday at LinuxWorld with one intention: to combat Microsoft Corp.'s (msft) dominance on the desktop. Members of the newly minted Gnome Foundation outlined the various open-source technologies that they are hoping to integrate going forward. They promised that this time, the fragmentation and infighting that has plagued vendor standardization efforts of the past will be smoothed over by the structure inherent in the GNU Public License and open-source business model.
