Google Calendar and Verizon

Verizon is not one of the options for SMS notification in Google Calendar -- that makes Verizon customers feel a bit ripped off.  But, I've done some snooping around and I found a simple solution for the problem.

Verizon is not one of the options for SMS notification in Google Calendar -- that makes Verizon customers feel a bit ripped off.  But, I've done some snooping around and I found a simple solution for the problem.

In Gmail

  1. Login to your gmail account
  2. click Settings
  3. click Filters
  4. click Create a new filter
  5. in the From box, enter: calendar-notification@google.com
  6. click Next Step
  7. select Forward it to: email address
  8. enter <yournumber>@vtext.com
  9. click Create Filter
In Google Calendar
  1. click Settings
  2. click Notifications
  3. check EMAIL for Event reminders

This work-around does not fix the Verizon SMS limitation on Google Calendar, it simply emulates the desired functionality.  The idea is to set up a filter on your Gmail that forwards email calendar notifications to your phone's email address (<your number>@vtext.com).

One bad thing about this solution is that you cannot have Google Calendar send notifications to just your email address -- only SMS alone or both SMS and email.  I do however think Verizon users who really want SMS functionality will be able to put up with this quirk.

Update:
It looks like Verizon users can use the T-Mobile option rather than setting up forwarding rules in  Gmail.  Thanks for  the comment.
