Google Voice invitations, with vanity phone numbers, coming soon

First, Facebook allowed users to grab a vanity URL for their profile pages. Now, Google is giving people a chance to choose a vanity phone number.

First, Facebook allowed users to grab a vanity URL for their profile pages. Now, Google is giving people a chance to choose a vanity phone number.

The invitations for the long-awaited Google Voice service are coming soon, Google said in a blog post today. And this time, Google is allowing users to type in a search for a word, letters or numbers to customize their phone number. AWESOME, for example, is 293-7663 (on most dial pads, but not the Blackberry Pearl). And don't forget about the area code as you think of a vanity number.

Invitations will be rolled out to those who requested them (and, yes, you can still request one.)
