Novell will roll out the next version of its GroupWise workgroup software in October, building in powerful Internet and document collaboration support that should make it a far more flexibile solution than rival Microsoft Exchange.

PCDN saw a demonstration of GroupWise 5.0 beta 3, which Novell says has 50 per cent different code to version 4.1. The revision, according to UK product manager Peter Joseph "is designed to address information overload" with mail, workflow, Internet, voice and group collaborative working tools integrated.

A much cleaner, highly customisable user interface features drag-and-drop folders that can have properties assigned, calendar, task list, work in progress and draft mode views, as well as a trashcan. Tasks can be prioritised and the mailbox now defaults to a general view rather than either 'in' or 'out' message lists.

NDS is required on the server but GroupWise supports NetWare, Windows NT, Unix and OS/2, a key selling point compared to the NT-dependent Exchange, Joseph claims.

Pricing will be close to the version 4.1 model of £70 per seat.
