Hitachi has found its first U.S. customer for embedded database software designed to ease searches on gadgets such as media players and vehicle navigation systems.

Blue Peach will use Hitachi's Entier software in its Digital Media Server, a system that lets customers store thousands of music, video and photo files, Hitachi said Tuesday.

Hitachi launched Entier a year ago in Japan. The software is now used in 10 devices in that country, with 30 more in development, said Steven King, Hitachi vice president of marketing. The software takes less than 1MB of memory and is designed to provide quick results when users search for specific words or word combinations.

The software also is geared for in-car navigation systems. It can rapidly search for points of interest within a specific circle or square where a user is located or along a route the user plans to take, King added.

Blue Peach is paying Hitachi an up-front fee and per-unit royalties, said Collin Bruce, director of embedded product marketing.

Hitachi also plans in coming days to announce partnerships with two other embedded software companies, Mentor Graphics and Wind River Systems, the company said.
