IBM is making a concerted effort to promote Linux on the mid-range server and mainframe platforms with the launch of AIX version 5.1.

Big Blue announced there will be special APIs for applications developed under the open source system. When using the new Linux interfaces in IBM's Unix derivative, the relevant applications are immediately executable after a new compilation. As a first step towards AIX compatibility with Linux, IBM is currently offering a free toolkit for Linux applications for download. It is a collection of development tools from the AIX world, which have been tailored for Linux. The new AIX 5L operating system will be officially released in a few months. by Jurgen Hofling, reporter, silicon.de
