The role was newly created to "take IronPort forward", according to Welby. He said IronPort had been progressing remarkably since Cisco bought it in 2007. Welby hoped to continue the growth.

Before being appointed to this role, Welby was a Cisco Systems account manager handling several Canberra-based and national accounts, mostly focussing on education. He joined Cisco from the ACT Government's department of disability housing and community services.

Welby said there had been a general manager Australia, John Martens, who moved on of his own volition a few months ago. Despite the national title, Martens had continued to have responsibility for specific accounts, according to Welby. Welby's new role will now have responsibility for all customers in Australia and New Zealand without focussing on specific account patches.
