Itanium-Linux group drafts new members

Two new members have joined the Gelato Federation, a group sponsored by Hewlett-Packard to improve research software for computers using Intel's Itanium processor and the Linux operating system. One new member is CERN, the European Center for Nuclear Research, a longtime tester of Itanium Linux systems. The other is National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), which conducts research on issues such as global warming.

HP helped Intel develop the Itanium family and has a strong vested interest in its success. The chip is the foundation for all HP's future high-end computer systems. Other Gelato members include the BioInformatics Institute in Singapore, Groupe ESIEE in France, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications in Illinois, Tsinghua University in China, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of New South Wales in Australia and the University of Waterloo in Canada. --Stephen Shankland, Special to ZDNet News
