Hackers have released a package that jailbreaks the iPad and newer iPhone OS, allowing users to install hundreds to unapproved apps on their Apple-branded device.

The package, called Spirit, jailbreaks all iPad, iPod touch or iPhone devices running OS 3.1.2, 3.1.3 and 3.2.

Here's the details:

  • Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch on the latest firmwares.
  • Spirit is not a carrier unlock.
  • If you currently are using a tethered jailbreak, you have to restore to use Spirit. Do not upgrade if you use an unlock on an iPhone 3G or 3GS. (You can, however, restore to 3.1.2 if you have SHSH blobs for that version.)

Spirit will work only on iPhone handsets that have been activated and they need to be running an unmodified version of recent firmware. Devices that have been previously jailbroken need to be restored to 3.1.2 before applying the Spirit patch.

Mac OS X and Windows downloads available.
