The offer, which went live today, was scheduled to be available only from 10am to 12pm.

The problem is a repeat of the meltdown that occurred in February 2007 when JetStar announced 22,000 seats for AU$22 each to some 300,000 e-mail subscribers.

Following the incident in February, JetStar corporate affairs manager, Simone Pregellio, told the Sydney Morning Herald that JetStar would be adding capacity to its "booking engine".

Responding to requests for information by ZDNet Australia about the one dollar campaign today, Pregellio said it had generated a -massive response".

The campaign generated 500,000 hits within the first hour.

Pregellio could not confirm whether JetStar had in fact added capacity to its online booking engine since February but said the maximum capacity it could handle was 10,000 simultaneous connections.

She added, -We're well equipped to handle that volume for one to two hours."
