The latest version of Quickoffice, a mobile office-productivity suite for smartphones, was demonstrated at the Symbian Smartphone Show on Tuesday.

Quickoffice 6.0, which will only become commercially available early next year, includes functionality with the ability to handle a greater number of file types. It also lets users open, edit and save back to Zip files for the first time.

Security enhancements in Quickoffice 6.0 include support for encrypted and password-protected Word and Excel documents.

Quickoffice's Adobe Mobile Reader for Series 60 handsets has also been updated with the latest Adobe engine, leading to faster response times and better rendition of PDF documents, the company claimed.

Remote access has become a major part of Quickoffice over the past year or two, and the suite now supports access to online file-storage services, including Apple's MobileMe iDisk, FilesAnywhere and Box.net. Access to files on SharePoint servers is also supported.
