LG has sold a million of its Optimus One Android phones within the first 40 days of the handset being available, the company said on Tuesday.

The Optimus One, which is an entry-level smartphone that runs the 'Froyo' version 2.2 of the Android operating system, has as a result become the fastest-selling handset in LG's history.

"The versatile, powerful LG Optimus One was designed to provide an easy transition into the world of smartphones and as these numbers demonstrate, there is obviously a strong demand for this type of device," LG chief executive Jong-seok Park said in a statement. "Optimus One seems to be what many customers were waiting for, proving that smartphones aren't just for early adopters anymore."

Android overtook Apple in the mobile operating system stakes in the last month, according to figures from Gartner. This means Google's platform is now second only to Nokia's Symbian, which has a steadily-falling market share.
