Maingear has added a 17-inch model to its gaming laptop collection. Given most of the features and the power behind the eX-L 17, this portable machine could replace most desktops.

Maingear seems to be trying to harness as many customer demographics as possible, from serious gamers to creative pros. The eX-L 17 allows for a ton of high-end customizable specs, including three graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480M, NVIDIA Quadro FX 2800M, or ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870. External designs run from a simple black chassis to fancy flourishes and other unusual patterns.

Some of other useful extras include a biometric fingerprint reader and standout features like four USB 3.0 ports, but here's what really important to choose from inside this notebook:

  • 17.3-inch diagonal Full HD LED-backlit widescreen display (1,920 x 1,080 resolution; 16:9 aspect ratio)
  • Windows 7 Home, Professional or Ultimate OS
  • Up to Intel Core i7 820QM processor
  • Up to 8GB of DDR3 dual-channel RAM
  • Up to 2X Blu-ray reader/8x Multi Combo DVD optical drive
  • Up to 750GB HDD or 512GB SSD
  • Wi-Fi

  • 7-in-1 Media Card Reader
  • Connectivity: Four USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, DVI-I, FireWire, S/PDIF, RJ-11
  • Dimensions: 16.25- x 1.75- x 10.75-inches
