Microsoft has made the latest version of the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) generally available as of December 2.

MDOP is Microsoft's suite of virtualization, management and security technologies meant to complement Windows that are available as a subscription service to customers with Software Assurance. Users can grab the MDOP 2013 R2 bits from the Volume Licensing Service Center.

The two biggest new features of MDOP 2013 R2 are support for Windows 8.1 and the ability to virtualize Office 2013.

The full set of technologies included MDOP 2013 R2, all of which get various new features and enhancements, are:

  • Application Virtualization (App-V) 5.0 SP2
  • Application Virtualization (App-V) 4.6 SP3
  • User Experience Virtualization (UE-V) 2.0
  • BitLocker Administration and Monitoring (MBAM) 2.0 SP1
  • Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset (DaRT) 8.1

App-V and UE-V are designed to allow customers to personalize, deploy and manage virtual apps across devices more easily. App-V 5.0 SP2 is the piece of MDOP 2013 R2 which adds the Office 2013 virtualization support.

Microsoft is planning a series of posts on the Springboard Series blog about the new MDOP features. The first focuses on the new virtualization capabilities.

Microsoft released the previous version of MDOP, MDOP 2013, in April 2013.
