Tired of overheating laptops and notebooks? Microsoft's hardware division is branching out beyond keyboards, joysticks and mice and is now in the "notebook cooling base" market.

Microsoft characterized the March 10 announcement as its Hardware Group's first move into a "new category of notebook accessories."

Starting in July, users will be able to buy their choice of one of these new cooling bases in white or black for $29.95. The bases can be used on a desk or on a lap.

Lest anyone doubt that it's a brave, new, heterogeneous world at Microsoft, the bases will support both PCs and Macs.
