MO standard to get multi-gigabyte revamp

A new standard promises to boost the flagging attraction of magneto-optical disk technology by delivering huge capacities, possibly topping 20Gb.

Vendors including Fujitsu, Phillips, Sony, Hitachi, Sharp, Sanyo, Olympus, and Imation will announce backing for the technology, called AS (Advanced Storage) MO or MO 7, in August or September, according to sources. Products based on AS MO will likely appear in 1998.
