Route1 on Thursday announced the Mobi, a mobile device that lets users securely connect to office and enterprise computing resources over any network.

Available in handheld and tablet configurations, the Mobi can run the Windows Mobile, CE, XP, or XP Tablet operating systems. It provides access to a Windows desktop or blade server, including all files, applications, and network resources.

Because remote users can run a familiar desktop and applications, no special support or training is required, Route1 said.

Route1's Seamless Workspace technology requires the host to establish connectivity with the Mobi, thus ensuring remote users comply with existing security policies and processes. The company's MobiAgent software and MobiNet service support multiple levels of user authentication, coupled with digital certificates and SSL tunnels for all end-to-end communications, which are encrypted using a FIPS 140-2 approved crypto set.

Unlike browser-based remote access solutions, MobiNet defeats "man in the middle" network attacks, while MobiAgent leaves no shadows or data traces on the device, Route1 claimed. Applications and data reside behind the firewall.

The Mobi provides a consistent user experience over GPRS, CDMA, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and dial-up connections. To enable a persistent connection Route1's IntelliRoam technology switches between networks -- even in the middle of document edits.

Route1 expects to ship the Mobi by the end of 2004. Pricing has not yet been finalized, but the company said the handheld model will sell for approximately $500, the tablet models for $1,500.
