MPS Moves Mainstream

Over at MPS Insights, there's an interesting article on MPS moving mainstream, which is something Doc has been saying now for a while.

A recent IBM study revealed that, out of 2,000 midmarket business executives in 20 countries, 75 percent of the midsized firms have started or are planning to make IT infrastructure investments to ensure flexible, scalable and secure IT systems.

Further, our 2010 MPS Decision Maker Tracking Study of over 1,500 IT decision makers in Europe, North America, and Asia revealed that Managed Print Services is one of the top three IT priorities for over 50 percent of these organizations. So how do these two statistics relate to each other?

Managed Print Services is the process of optimizing the document production infrastructure, including printers, copiers, MFPs, faxes and their associated supplies. MPS optimizes the firm's document production and management, as well as their document software infrastructure and any other software associated with optimizing the device fleet.  All of these devices and software represent an integral part of the firm's IT infrastructure.

Imaging devices have evolved significantly beyond merely printing, faxing or copying documents. Today's printer and MFPs often have large touch screen displays, sophisticated MIPS processors, built-in software (in some cases Java-based), and seamless integration into corporate IT intranet and systems (including corporate databases). As one IT executive described it, these are no longer printing or copying devices: they are document input and output portals with advanced workflow management capabilities.
