A Windows-powered gas pump or networked refrigerator may sound more like science fiction than fact. If Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) has its way, they could arrive a lot sooner than expected. This week at its WinHEC conference in New Orleans, Microsoft unveiled a new unit, inside its Platform Group, that will target the market for embedded devices. The new division, called the Embedded and Appliance Platforms Group, will be led by Microsoft operating system-team veteran Bill Veghte. Full story to follow. --John G. Spooner, ZDNet News
