Netgear has launched a 10GbE smart switch for small businesses that want to start their own network, or cheaply expand an existing one.

The 52-port GS752TXS, introduced on Monday, is Netgear's first 10GbE switch that is manageable via a web-based graphical user interface. In the food chain of switches it sits between low-end unmanaged switches and the more expensive command line-accessible managed switches from vendors such as HP and Cisco.

"There are multiple uses for this switch," Peter Airs, a marketing manager for Netgear in Europe, said. It could be used as a company's sole switch if they were small or "deployed as an edge switch, with lots around a building, and all connecting through to a 10GbE managed switch" if by a larger company, he added.

Unlike managed switches, the GS752TXS does not have a serial connection. This means administrators cannot boot into it from outside the network for maintenance or tweak it via the command line. New firmware packages for the switch can be installed by downloading them from a Netgear support page and uploading them via the bundled Smart Control Centre software.

It has 48 Gigabit Ethernet ports and four 10GbE ports. Up to six of the switches can be stacked together, with up to two ports from each switch available for stacking.

It is available to buy in the US and will be coming to the UK by the end of August, Airs said. Prices will start at around £1,000.
