PARIS--A year after the release of the Palm Vx, a successor is on the handheld horizon.

According to sources close to the company, the new PDA line, which will probably carry the name "M505," should weigh in at less than 3.5 ounces, include lithium-polymer batteries and offer an expansion slot to rival the Visor Handspring.

Sources said Palm (palm) is working on two new systems: a monochrome model priced at about $495 in France and a 16-bit-color configuration that costs about $635 here.

The monochrome version will see a performance boost of 30 percent compared with the Palm Vx and won't weigh more than 3.25 ounces, about 0.9 ounces less than the current model. The color version will weigh between 3.9 and 4.3 ounces, based on the use of flexible lithium-polymer batteries. Delivering on the company's promises of a slimmer color PDA, the 16-bit version will be only 1mm thicker than the Palm Vx. Full story. --Damien Prat, ZDNet France
