News Burst: Sony announces plans for PlayStation3

A short life-span for the elusive PS2 as plans for its successor leak out

Japanese electronics manufacturer Sony announced plans to launch a PlayStation3 console Monday, just three months after the debut of its PlayStation2 in Europe.

The improved model claims to be 1,000 times faster than the PS2, with the capacity for downloading and playing films and music quickly. Based on the expectation of households having faster Internet access, the console will also enable users to access online shopping and banking services.

Sony is preparing to launch the PS3 in the shops in two years time.
