Nokia and Pointsec Mobile Technologies have jointly developed a solution to protect the data in enterprise customers’ mobile devices.

The new file encryption system, Pointsec for Symbian OS, enables the encryption of any user data, such as e-mail, SMS and MMS messages, calendar and contact entries, and files stored on memory cards. The solution will be available for Nokia Series 60 and Series 80 devices, starting with the Nokia 9500 Communicator.

Devices outfitted with the software will gain real-time, user-transparent, 128-bit AES data encryption. Files are automatically encrypted before they are stored on a device and automatically decrypted again when opened—without any need for user intervention. Pointsec for Symbian OS also employs the company’s Picture PIN user authentication system, which the company said ensures data cannot be accessed by unauthorized individuals.

Other features include central management of security profiles, secure remote help, advanced data recovery, and third-party device management support.

Pointsec offers similar file-encryption applications for Palm OS and Pocket PC handhelds.

The Nokia 9500-compatible version of Pointsec for Symbian OS, which requires 500K of memory on the device. will be available in the third quarter. The solution will be available through Pointsec VAR and system integration channels.
