Nutanix with Citrix VDI is expected to run enterprises a bit more than $400 a year. That price could open the market up a bit for mid-sized businesses.

Nutanix launched an integrated system that's designed to make it easier to deploy Citrix-based virtual desktops for mid-sized companies.

At Citrix's Synergy conference, Nutanix outlined its InstantON VDI for Citrix, which includes Citrix's XenDesktop VDI Edition, Nutanix's cloud platform with machine create services.

The integrated system includes three years support and runs about $415 a desktop. Gartner estimates that the annual end-user computing cost is $1,015.

Nutanix's argument is that its virtual desktop bundle with Citrix will cost less than a virtual desktop and then allow companies to support multiple end points. Nutanix in its statement noted that a Raspberry-Pi-based device system could run it.

Among the key points:

  • The system bundles Nutanix's AHV virtualization technology so companies don't have to manage server virtual machines.
  • The system can scale starting at 300 users.
  • Nutanix said there's an average 4-hour deployment time.
  • Nutanix added that its system for Citrix VDI will be available in June.
