Of course the next iPhone is likely evolutionary, not revolutionary

All indications are that Apple will reveal its yearly iPhone update in early summer and in all likelihood it will be an evolutionary piece of hardware, rather than a revolutionary one.

I generally agree with most things that my fellow ZDNet Mobile Gadgeteer blogger Joel Evans writes, but I really don't know understand why he is surprised that the next iPhone will likely be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. If the next iPhone has a few updated aspects then it will follow the pattern of Apple releases and make perfect sense.

Apple launched with the iPhone, then went to the iPhone 3G and 3GS, before releasing the iPhone 4. Thus, the next one should likely be something like the iPhone 4G and be something similar to the iPhone 4 with a faster processor and 4G radio. Joel even writes about the rumors of a slightly larger display and NFC technology. I would personally love to see a 4 inch display because I personally feel that is the sweet spot for a pocketable smartphone.

I am primarily using Windows Phone 7 devices at the moment, but don't see much of anything coming, in terms of new hardware, for most of this year so I am personally considering the next iPhone after skipping the iPhone 4. The Apple iPhone 4 has sold extremely well and is a beautiful piece of hardware. Other than 4G, there really isn't much else that I see that Apple should add to the device this year.

The iOS  software updates in the next iPhone are where I am really looking for some innovation from Apple. I want to see a better notification system and also a way to have a glanceable Home/Today screen. If Apple can bring me those two things on a slightly updated iPhone 4, then I will likely be back to using an iPhone this year.
