Ovi Store rolls out in early beta form on the Nokia N900

I posted my full review of the Nokia N900 a couple weeks ago and mentioned that there were ways to get some applications on the device through different Application Catalogs. I popped my SIM in the other day and found a new firmware update available followed by activation of the Ovi Store link on the device. Tapping on the Ovi Store icon takes you to the store.ovi.mobi site in the web browser. This is the beta version of the Ovi Store that actually recognizes you are on the N900 and only shows you applications that are designed to work with the Nokia N900. By my count, there are currently 31 applications, 11 games, 33 audio/video pieces of content, and 9 themes.

The Ovi Store for the N900 is still in early beta and I am sure we will see content hitting soon as Nokia tests out the system. If you do not yet have a Nokia N900 or want to see what is available for this device via a web browser on your PC then you can visit the Ovi Store and select the Nokia N900 as your device.

You will need to sign in with your Ovi Store account to download applications and after tapping on Download you will see your device jump over to the Application Manager and then go through the download and installation process you may have experienced before. If you check your Application Catalog list you will see one labeled Ovi as well. After installing an application you will find it on the second page (tap More from the first page) of shortcuts on the N900 launcher.

At this time I have the following loaded on my N900 from the Ovi Store:

  • Angry Birds (fun, great looking game)
  • Anglemeter (measure the angle you rotate your device)
  • Discs (Connect Four game)
  • Labyrinth Lite (marble accelerometer game)
  • Solitaire Touch (basic Solitaire game, only flips one card at a time)
  • Level Touch (virtual level utility)

I highly recommend downloading and playing the Angry Birds game and if you want to know more about this hilarious game then check out my video over in my Nokia Experts article.

I am personally hoping to soon see more social networking apps (Gravity for Twitter and a Foursquare app would be nice), games that take advantage of the power of the N900, and a full Office suite (Documents To Go is currently only available as a viewer). What apps would you like to see on the Ovi Store for the Nokia N900?
