Player finishes World of Warcraft, moves on to War and Peace

World of Warcraft is one of those games that never seems to end. And I mean that in a good way. There's always one more dungeon to raid, one more frog to hug, or one more cliff to jump off. Launched in 2004, the game has captivated (and looted the wallets of) millions of players around the world. But nobody has actually finished it. Until now.

The Taiwanese player whose character name ?? means "little gray", completed the game during the recent Thanksgiving event. WoW measures progress by achievements, and this guy got all 986 of them.* Some of the final achievements that put him over the top were: (I'm not making this up, honest)

  • Food Fight!: Bounce food off a fellow feaster's head at the Thanksgiving table.
  • Pilgrim's Peril: While dressed as a Pilgrim, sit down at each enemy capital's Thanksgiving table. And finally my favorite,
  • The Turkinator: Hunt enough wild turkeys quickly enough to gain "Turkey Triumph". I tried this one and only got to "Turkey Domination".

(*) This great, um, achievement, was not without controversy however. Purists insist that he's still missing an achievement called "BB King" that involves running around and pelting 5 enemies with an air rifle. Looking at the picture above you can see that an apparent bug in the game credited him an extra point in the Player vs. Player category (165 out of a possible 164), which offset the missing event achievement (138 of 139 in World Events).

Despite the asterisk, it's nice to see that "finishing" is possible. There's a light at the end of that Dwarven tunnel. It just takes extreme dedication, lots of free time, and maybe a case of Depends for those late night grinding sessions.
