A reader whose email address maps back to a document services firm has just written me with a compelling and intriguing question.

A former customer of dead-and-being buried SunRocket, he wants to know if there is any way for him to obtain his own SunRocket call logs. What could be at stake, he says, is evidence that could send a "predatory pervert" to prison.

Here's his note:

I love on-line records, as I see printed paper records as being the height of insecurity, but when the company goes belly-up, I fear my on-line records may just go straight to the bit-bucket.

Please tell me there's a way to get this out of SunRocket LLC, or out of Sherwood Partners, or someone.  (Tell me the truth, of course, but don't say "impossible" too quickly - these records could be useful as evidence in a court case in which a predatory pervert might get sent to prison.)

Well, I don't say "impossible" too quickly. Far more than just being a digital packrat seems to be at stake here. Try as many avenues as you can and don't be afraid to be a PITA.  (and  I do not mean the bread).
