Report: Cyanogen lays off 20 percent of its workforce
OS vendor Cyanogen Inc. on Friday laid off around 30 people, or 20 percent of its workforce, according to AndroidPolice.
The cuts reportedly hit the company's systems and QA teams, as well as customer support. Employees were let go at Cyanogen's headquarters in Seattle and in Palo Alto, as well as at smaller offices in Lisbon and India, AndroidPolice reported.
Cyanogen did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The layoffs are reportedly part of a change in strategy, which Recode reports is spearheaded by the firm's new COO Lior Tal.
Cyanogen, which offers an Android OS that serves as an alternative to Google's, tried to take on Google with a Microsoft partnership first announced in April 2015. At the start of this year, owners of the Cyanogen-powered OnePlus One phone saw an update with deeply integrated features for Cortana. Then in February, the OS vendor introduced a new mod platform, first featuring a series of Microsoft-specific mods for OEMs and service providers.
Last month, UK smartphone company Wileyfox unveiled three new low-cost handsets, all running Cyanogen OS.
