Report: LCD TV sales to boom

Sales of televisions built into liquid-crystal displays are still small but are growing rapidly partly because of the falling prices of LCDs, according to market researcher DisplaySearch. About 141,500 LCD TVs with 10-inch screens or larger shipped worldwide in the first quarter.

Sales of televisions built into liquid-crystal displays are still small but are growing rapidly partly because of the falling prices of LCDs, according to market researcher DisplaySearch. About 141,500 LCD TVs with 10-inch screens or larger shipped worldwide in the first quarter. This represents an 130 percent increase from the previous quarter, DisplaySearch said. Japan represented 74 percent of worldwide sales in the first quarter.

Growth in LCD TV sales is expected to remain substantial, DisplaySearch said, as more companies enter the market, building product recognition and leading to decreased prices. DisplaySearch projects that shipments will reach 673,000 in the third quarter. --Natalie Weinstein, Special to ZDNet News
