Salesforce.com is expanding its mobile offerings, creating a free "lite" version for customers who use the Professional and Enterprise Editions of the software. Previously, only Unlimited Edition customers were offered free use of the mobile software, while Professional and Enterprise customers were charged a fee. That structure hasn't changed.

The company is introducing the lite version at today's Cloudforce London event.

The move is a smart one for salesforce.com and could be good for some of those customers who may have been resisting a paid version but wanted to expand into mobile tools. If those customers find mobile access to be beneficial, they may be willing to upgrade to a paid version down the road.

In a statement, company chairman and CEO Marc Benioff said, " By delivering mobile access to our cloud, for free, we're accelerating adoption of the cloud and delivering value to customers in times when they need it most."

The salesforce CRM software is compatible with iPhone, Blackberry and Windows Mobile devices.
