Kevin Epstein, head of marketing for Scalent Systems, called my attention to the fact this his company has recently signed an OEM agreement with Unisys. At first glance, this appears to be good for both companies. Here are a few words from the announcement:
The Scalent V/OE software enables data centers to react in real-time to changing business needs. It does this by dynamically changing which servers are running and how those servers are connected to networks and storage systems. This dynamic resource allocation is guided by predefined rules specific to the business and happens without physical intervention.
The Scalent software expands the capabilities of Unisys real-time infrastructure solutions. It will enable Unisys to create solutions that complement virtualized server environments and associated transformation services, encompassing solutions and services for the entire enterprise IT infrastructure.
Unisys often doesn't get the attention its products deserve. I suspect this is because the company appears to market only to specific industries, such as Government and Manufacturing, rather than trying to be a broad player. In their chosen markets, however, Unisys is a very well known name.
As virtual systems running on industry standard systems becomes an increasingly important component of the roadmap of future computing infrastructure in Unisys' target markets, the company needed to deploy management tools to assist in testing and disaster recovery solutions. Rather than go to the effort of developing the tools that Scalent Systems has already been selling, Unisys wisely chose to partner with Scalent.
I don't think this partnership will make Unisys or Scalent Systems names that are discussed over the breakfast table in homes across the world. It will, however, provide both companies with help getting their messages out to people and their joint customers create a better managed and more responsive environment.
I look forward to learning of more agreements of this type between Scalent and other suppliers of industry standard systems.
