Sun Microsystems and Lucent Technologies on Monday unveiled another entry into the crowded field of unified messaging software, or creating a single in-box for voice mail, faxes and e-mails--the result of a partnership between the two announced in 1998.
An unnamed "major" U.S. wireless telephone service provider and a European cable television giant are quietly testing the software developed through a Sun partnership with Lucent, said Lucent Vice President Jean Jacques Lhospital. Carriers in Asia and South America are also conducting trials, he said.
While carriers are making plans to offer the service, a recent report from The Radicati Group, which is a unified messaging analyst, shows that service providers spent a relatively small $193 million this year on the gear needed to offer unified messaging. Also, several unified messaging makers have either shut down or scaled back in the past year, according to The Radicati Group. --Ben Charny, ZDNet News
