Suse Linux aims to put a penguin in your pocket

Suse Linux, a leading distributor of the Linux operating system (OS) has confirmed that it is moving into the embedded PocketPC market.

Dirk Hohndel, chief technology officer at Suse, said: "We have been active in the embedded space for sometime but are not interested in the cell phone or refrigerator market." He confirmed that the company is working with manufacturers such as Compaq and will be looking for further hardware partners. Suse Linux's focus will be on high-end embedded devices such as Compaq's iPaq and Diamond's and Gateway's Webpads. These products all have significant computing power similar to a 200MHZ P2 desktop system. Hohndel said: "Linux is moving in the high-end PDA-desktop direction. In the future everyone will have a PDA or Webpad. These are simply an evolution of the desktop which is still very much alive and kicking." For related stories see:
