Toshiba has updated its business and consumer notebook lineup, introducing models with Intel's Centrino Pro platform and Core 2 Duo processors.

The flagship product in the business range is the Portégé R500 — which Toshiba claimed features "several world-firsts". According to the PC maker, it's the lightest and thinnest notebook with a 7mm optical disk drive, it has the longest lasting battery life (12.5 hours, measured according to Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association standards) and is the first commercially available notebook to use transflective LED backlight technology. The transflective technology is similar to that in One Laptop per Child's XO laptop.

Using the standard 12.5 hour six-cell battery, the Portégé R500 weighs in at just under one kilogram (999 grams) and includes a 12.1-inch display, keeping to a svelte 19.5 by 283 by 215mm.

Customers can select the Portégé R500 with standard 120GB hard drive for £1,392 or opt for a 64GB NAND flash SSD (solid-state drive) for £1,739.
