Two Larrys face off in Google-Oracle settlement talks

The chief executives of Google and Oracle are set to meet on Monday and Tuesday, to discuss a possible settlement of the lawsuit Oracle brought about just over a year ago.

Google's Larry Page and Oracle's Larry Ellison will appear before a San Jose federal court magistrate, to see whether a lengthy and complex full trial can be avoided.

Oracle sued Google in August 2010, arguing that the Android mobile operating system's Java implementation infringed on patents Oracle picked up when it bought Sun Microsystems in 2009. Oracle also claimed that Google directly copied Java code into Android.

After Oracle objected to Google bringing in Android chief Andy Rubin to negotiate a potential settlement, Judge William Alsup recommended forcing Ellison and Page to meet face-to-face.

If a settlement is reached, it will obviate the full trial that is scheduled for October. Alsup has expressed frustration with the number of claims Oracle wants to assert against Google, as well as the level of damages Oracle is looking for.
