Mobile operators craving fresh revenue streams have brought in a new technology that allows British Web surfers to get online information sent to their phones in a text message, the technology's creator, PocketThis, said Friday. The company has been working with wireless communications company Orange to develop such a system for mobile operators, and Orange Pocket will be fully launched in Britain in the coming months. Rival operators have also expressed an interest.

Nancy Benovich Gilby, founder and chief executive of Oakland, Calif.-based PocketThis, likened the system to an "electronic Post-It note" that lets consumers get information on used car prices, travel details or movie times sent straight to their mobile phones. PocketThis has signed up more than 150 partners, including online used car exchange Auto Trader and online retailer Lastminute.com. Customers request information at the sites by clicking on the button, which says "send to my mobile". --Reuters
