US Report: New technology to quadruple Flash card capacity

Flash cards will soon reach capacities of 300MB, thanks to new component mounting technology being patented by Hitachi Semiconductor America and Hitachi ULSI Systems.

The technology, called slanted packaging mounting, uses thin Tape Carrier Package Flash components laid out in an angle instead of stacked. This allows 40 TCP-packaged 64M-bit components to be fit on a single PCMCIA card, quadrupling the memory densities of Hitachi's Flash cards, officials said.

Hitachi expects handheld PCs, digital cameras and industrial manufacturing equipment to be the primary devices that use the 300MB Flash cards.
