When I got a Second Life, I discovered science-related places in the digital world

I appeared in a Second Life show, so I had to create an avatar. As it turns out, there are plenty of science-related places in the digital world to visit. This is why you need an avatar ASAP.

I was on Pooky Amersterdam's The First Question, a science quiz show in Second Life. If you watch the hour-long show, my avatar's name is Sydney Caramel. I was on with Mark Kingdon, the CEO of Linden Labs.

While some questions were hard, some of the questions came from articles found here on Smart Planet.

I think I did okay. But unfortunately, I came in second. Kingdon beat me by one question!

The show was fun to be part of. The audience hung around after the show to chat.

Amsterdam opened up a whole new world to me in Second Life. I was curious to find out what other science activity was happening in this virtual world. As it turns out, there are more than 100 science-related organizations in Second Life.

I picked out 10 of the science-related places that you might want to check out:

  1. Caerleon Planetarium - See the night sky.
  2. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Watch informational videos, visit a virtual lab, or go to the conference center.
  3. Consumer Health Library - Provides training programs and offers support for Second Life people.
  4. Department of Energy Island - Apparently you can chase a proton around the accelerator ring at CERN/ LHC.
  5. Dinosaur Park - The Second Life version of Jurassic Park.
  6. FireSabre's Volcano -If you're not traumatized by volcanic eruptions, then go here. At the touch of a button, make a volcano erupt and watch hot lava fly out and see ash plumes scatter into the sky.
  7. MoonWorld - NASA let's you visit the Lunar Orbiting Station and even lets you put on a spacesuit so you can go to the Moonbase.
  8. Science in 3D - This is a training base for entrepreneurs.
  9. Testis Tour - Ohio State University created an animation that takes you through the male testis.
  10. Virtual Hallucinations - Check out what hallucinations feel like. FYI, this project wants to teach you about schizophrenia, not drug use.
