Motorola Xoom owners in the UK can now download and install Android 3.1, but users in other countries are already one step ahead having moved to Android 3.2.

The update, which began rolling out over-the-air (OTA) on Tuesday, updates the operating system to Android Honeycomb version 3.1, as well as activating the SD card expansion slot, allowing for extra storage. SD cards of up to 32GB are supported, Motorola said.

In June, Motorola said it had already started sending out Android 3.2 to Motorola Xoom tablets worldwide. However, it transpired that this was only for 'Google Experience' devices. Google Experience devices provide a non-operator tweaked version of the Android operating system but include all the standard Google apps.

"Motorola Xoom units in other regions are not Google Experience devices," the company said on its Facebook wall ahead of the roll-out. "Because of this, Motorola has greater flexibility in providing software updates to these devices, including providing additional functionality that may not be included in the Google software updates."

Android 3.1 brings new features such as resizable home screen widgets, keyboard, mouse and joystick support via Bluetooth or USB and a Wi-Fi lock, which Motorola said allows the device to "maintain high-performance Wi-Fi connections" even when the screen is turned off.
