Small-biz technology maker ZyXEL Communications says it has added intelligent energy management to several of its wired and wireless firewall and virtual private network gateway products.

The products -- the ZyWALL USG20 firewall/VPN, USG20W 802.11n/3G firewall/VPN, and USG50 Unified Threat Management appliances -- all come with something called IntelliEnergy Green Technology. This is as feature that keeps tabs on network traffic, link status and temperature, making adjustments to power consumption as necessary. So, if the network is idle, the amount of electricity that one of these devices draws will be drastically reduced. In some cases, ZyXEL figures that consumption can be cut by up to 80 percent if this feature is turned on. The appliances include content filtering from BlueCoat, which can be used to manage inappropriate Web application or social network usage during certain work hours.

Suggest retail prices for the products are:

  • $249.99 for the USG20, which comes with 100Mbps firewall and 30Mbps VPN performance, as well as hybrid IPSec and SSL VPN, 3G back-up support and bandwidth management
  • $299.99 for the USG20W, which is the 802.11n wireless version of the appliance
  • $349.99 for the USG50 Unified Threat Management appliance, which includes 100Mbps firewall and 50Mbps VPN performance
