The BBC has switched from Flash to HTML5 for streaming video on its mobile news site, according to reports.

The move, reported by Electronista on Tuesday, means the mobile BBC News site can run video on iOS as well as Android smartphones and tablets.

According to the report, the BBC tested the HTML5 delivery first in the site's Health section.

BBC News is the latest in a series of content providers to move away from Flash, which Adobe is dropping as a mobile concern apart from its continued development of the Flash-based AIR.

Lovefilm said at the start of December that it was moving from Flash to Microsoft's Silverlight, rather than to HTML5. It said this was because HTML5 does not offer sufficient digital rights management (DRM) to satisfy the film studios that people will not simply rip and redistribute the content they get off Lovefilm.

  • What content does Lovefilm have for streaming that hasn't already been pirated? Of that content, what percentage isn't available in easily ripable DVD from Lovefilm? Seems like they're closing the barn door after the horse has bolted.

What would really be amusing is if MS do end up dropping Silverlight. I wonder what they'll do then.
