Apple today announced that the App Store has surpassed two billion downloads. There are now more than 85,000 apps available to the more than 50 million iPhone and iPod touch customers worldwide.

Steve Jobs clarified that the App Store downloads number does not include updates at Apple's "It's Only Rock and Roll" media event earlier this month.

Apple also mentioned that over 125,000 developers have joined Apple’s iPhone Developer Program, but it didn't denote how many of those actually shipped an app. Many people joined the $99 developer program only to get early access to the iPhone OS 3.0 beta builds.

All the talk about Apple's 'possible' tablet has missed the boat. The
iPhone IS an Apple tablet computer. While a good many of the apps are
admittedly silly, the vast majority aren't. I'm not sure Windows has
85,000 applications. What is a netbook, but a smallish computer able to
browse the web? Seems the iPhone does that quite nicely already.

    • You got it boy..er..girl..er..whatever!

The iPhone will become a 7" device that will BE the netbook. It does everything needed...INCLUDING Phone Calls! Just needs a bigger screen and some apps.

iPhone TS will be the new Tablet that will take over NetBooks (er...maybe iPhone NB?)!!

Point is, say GoodBye to Windows!

  • You're right...

...WinMo and Symbian don't have 85,000 apps.

Mainly because they've been around for years and their catalogues have been weeded.

    • Neither WinMo or Symbian have as active a developer community

That, along with an easy distribution channel, are the biggest reasons.

It has little to do with gardening.

    • And WinMo and Nokia devices suck. Ever think of that? (NT)

  • Symbian developer community...

    ...is the largest actually.

Oh and the vast majority of its members didn't join just to download a beta OS release.

    • Not really.

And who ever said "vast majority of its members didn't join just to
      download a beta OS release."?

Only a fool translates the word "many" to "vast majority".

But I am sure it makes you sleep better at night believing that.

      • Stop crying.

        You were wrong.

I mean you'll be believing the 50 million customers line next!

        • Wrong with what?

I think I am right that you know little about the mobile space. I also
know that "many" does not translate to "vast majority".
