Best iPhone mod of 2011: the glowing Apple logo

By | December 16, 2011, 8:00am PST

Summary: This mod from China makes the Apple logo on your iPhone 4 or 4S light up when it rings or when you get a text message. Get one for the Apple nerd on your list before it’s too late.

Best iPhone mod of 2011: the glowing Apple logo

Did you happen to grab one of K.O. Gadget’s uber-cool Luminescent Apple logo mods for the iPhone 4/4S this morning? If you did, consider yourself lucky.

Just like the iTether app before it — which slipped through the App Store Gestapo’s fingers around Thanksgiving — the Luminescent Logo Mod Kit for iPhone 4/4S may have become the victim of Apple legal.

M.I.C. Gadget’s Chris Chang first broke the news about the replacement iPhone 4 and 4S rear panels that feature a transparent Apple logo and a backlit panel that is hot-wired to the iPhone’s logic board:

the light, which glows when the phone receives a call or message or when the alarm sounds, would stay on for 15 seconds even after the screen goes off. And most importantly, the light does not noticeably affect battery performance or cause any heating issues.

Some time around 10:00am ET, the site became unresponsive and was either overcome by high demand or taken down at the request of Cupertino.

Perhaps it was KO’s ballsy “time remaining for purchase” countdown clock that encouraged buyers to “get it before C&D (cease and desist)” that drew the ire of Apple? Ya think?

The modification is end-user installable (in less than 5 minutes) and was being offered for $42.90 (plus $13.50 shipping) before the site went down — which is much more affordable than the similar iPatch mod that was announced in September for $159. While it technically voids your iPhone warranty, K.O. Gadget claims that its logo mod is fully reversible.

Oh, you silly, silly, modders :)

Unfortunately, most of the installation process is obscured by the installers hands in this less-than-stellar video:

Update: Looks like this TechCrunch post might have overwhelmed KO’s server.

Update2: In addition to the stock “Link to database cannot be established” I’m getting these new error messages:

Maintenance Mode error message at KO gadgets

Update3: w00t! Here’s the actual website copy, captured during a rare moment that the site was up today:

I installed the mod 3 days ago on my 4S.
The good:
- Fairly simple instructions (using the video from the site/youtube).
- All necessary tools and sticky tape included (in a tacky display case).
- No soldering or other "destructive" activity required to install the mod.
- It actually looks really good, when it lights up the back.

The bad:
- The no-soldering approach means that you're attaching one wire to a surface using 3M double-sticky tape (included) - feels cheap and "likely to not last"
- The strategy to aligning the lightpad is that you cut out pieces of a thin foam sticker and place them on the battery and whatever inside, which us supposed to prevent the light from moving around inside the case - no instructions is given about exactly *where* to put the light so it is aligned correctly when the back cover is put on.
- Back cover is really cheap plastic - nothing like the original "glass" back.
- The lightpad is actually a little too fat to fit between the battery and the cover, leaving a small gap at the top (which is *really* visible when the light is on)
- The lightpad being too fat means that you're putting strain on the (cheap plastic) back cover, which (in my case) meant that it cracked right down through the Apple logo after 2 days.
- This whole mod is not very compatible with the app "Sleep Cycle", which makes you put your phone upside down under your sheet (and attach it to a charger). The result is that the logo will be lit all night - pointing up and lighting up your bedroom.

Conclusion:
I am a bit disappointed - mostly about the quality of the back cover, but also the fact, that the manufacturer has not made an effort to make it easier to align the light with the back cover *and* fix the issue concerning the fact, that the lightpad is actually too thick to fit properly in there. I will probably be uninstalling shortly...
