Hell froze over; Dvorak using a Mac

Summary: Perennial curmudgeon John C. Dvorak may be the ultimate switcher of all time.

Perennial curmudgeon John C. Dvorak may be the ultimate switcher of all time. That's right, Dvorak is using a Mac. In a recent column for PC magazine ( Me and My Mac) Dvorak says "That's right. I'm using a Mac, and, surprise, I like it."

Hey, I figured since I'm known for ragging on the Mac all the time, I may as well speak from some experience, right? It's been a couple of months now, so I thought I'd report what I think about the platform from a user's perspective—specifically, from a PC user's perspective.

This from a guy who said:

But then he started coming around when he wrote that Windows Vista could mark a downward spiral for Microsoft and a rising of Apple and Linux.

But it shouldn't be that surprising since Dvorak once admitted on camera that he writes all those inflammatory anti-Apple pieces to get "a lot of links and attention."

What's your favorite Dvorak Anti-Apple quote?

  • And now we know the rest of the story...

as to why John gets no SPAM. :)

  • And now that Dvorak is using a Mac the Mac Fanbois will...

...hold him up as the poster child of truth instead of the poster child of FUD.

    • When Dvorak was bashing Apple back in the days .

You & many others portrayed him as one who spoke of truth , now that he is using a Mac , you turn your back on him . HYPOCRITE understand this , he made a simple choice and that was it . He prefers Macs over Windows , now he is your enemy Ye . ROTFLMAO !!! Hypocrite !!!

      • Please support your accusation:

"You & many others portrayed him as one who spoke of truth..."

Please provide quotes, references, etc. Otherwise you're just wishing this is what I did.

"now he is your enemy Ye ."

Why would he be my enemy? Regardless of anyone's choice of platform I don't take this stuff so seriously as to consider someone an enemy.

As a Mac user myself I welcome him to the platform.

        • Seems like you do though

Based on the first post, can't really blame someone for responding to it can you?

          • Seems that I do what?

"Based on the first post, can't really blame someone for responding to it can you?"

            Please elaborate.

          • Tell Me

Tell me, what is the larger sign of commitment and conviction. Would it be coming
on a forum and posting something like "Macs are awesome!", or would it laying
down hard earned cash, voting with your dollars, and purchasing one?

Talk is cheap. The definition of a Mac zealot around here is based on what one
says. You seem quick to assign that attribute based on what you've read. But
            you're the cool-headed one right?

Here's my point. If you own and use a Mac, you effectively are a Apple zealot. To
be fair, a PC user becomes a PC zealot. Are we happy now? Those who have used
and understand the advantages of both platforms, we're supposed to be raising
the level of discourse. So this has been a missed opportunity for you. By buying a
Mac you've displayed a greater degree of conviction beyond any of the hyperbole
that crops up here. If you take offense at the characterization, and are eager to
differentiate yourself from the frothy mouthed, kool-aid soaked, nutbars that you
have such distain for, I'd suggest leading by example. Until you do, you are
effectively asking us to ignore you.

          • I am not an Apple zealot. I am an Apple user.

The difference is that I don't spread FUD about the competition. I'm able to see the strengths of other platforms and the weaknesses of the Macintosh.

"Until you do, you are effectively asking us to ignore you."

You place too much on your self worth thinking I care if you listen to me or not.
            ye
          • Affirmation

It's called affirmative action. Agree with it or not, a you wish. The market is grossly
imbalanced and has been for a long time. It's a consequence of illegal acts. I resent
being played. If you don't bear that burden, more power to you.

Regarding FUD. Clearly I'm making this up. The plague of malware, the zombie
computers, the undependable boxes, the antitrust suit, and the long delays. These
are figments of my imagination? You're the one giving me too much credit I think.

He's a born again, apparently. Hell, that was OK to elect Bush president (the first
president ever to have been found guilty of breaking the law before entering office).

What we would like to see is people being more open to high quality. Apple is about
quality. The PC world is mostly about cheap junk that underdelivers on its promise.
          And that includes Vista.

      • You need to read the rest of the article...

        From Me and My Mac
"I have no plans to move to the Mac platform for my personal use."

However he also had statements like this
"I can see why the Mac is gaining market share, because the rationale for using one is simple. Do you want to deal with the agony of antivirus, firewall, antispyware, and other touchy software subsystems, many of which do not work well? Or do you want to boot Microsoft Word and write a document and be done with it?"

    • Jealousy will get you........................

      NOWHERE!

Microsoft will NOT reward you for your
jealousy, even when it turns to envy.

  • Lazy reporting

It really is a bit sad how many Mac fanatics read an article title and make their judgements based on that. If anyone follows Dvorak, they know he's got two purposes with his writing. To get as many eyes as possible and to point out the negatives that all the "enthusiasts" forget to mention REGARDLESS of who makes it.

Never did Dvorak say Apple sucks and most of the time he compliments Apple for the things they do right. Yet here we are again, another well respected Apple reporter exposing his support of the idea that reading the title is more important than reading the article.

  • PC = Windoze != Mac ???

I see Dvorak kept using "PC" is if that automatically meant the Windows OS. A lot of confusion there since Linux probably easily has a comparable number of total installations, if not more, on "PC's" as the total number of Macs running OS X (the one with the "modern underpinnings of the unix kernel" - another hoot since the BSD unix that refers to could be seen as dating back to the 70's, which predates Windoze 3/9x/NT by more than a decade - guess he really means it has a more robust, extensible design ;-). And now that Mac's use Intel CPU's, with the prospect of running Windows XP/Vista/x86 Linux, there is not much sense in that simple dichotomy.
