Hooks to speech recognition found in iOS 5

Hooks to speech recognition found in iOS 5

Summary: While Apple was busy extolling the virtues of notifications, iMessage and wireless sync at WWDC, hooks to speech technology were found lurking in iOS 5's "internal preferences."

SHARE:

While Apple announced 200 new features in iOS 5 there are a couple of glaring omissions, too. The one that sticks out in my mind is iOS' achilles heel: speech recognition.

Apple’s been in secret negotiations with Nuance Communications Inc. (NUAN) for some months now and I was hoping that speech recognition would arrive in iOS 5 at WWDC -- but it didn't. At least not officially, anyway.

While Apple was busy extolling the virtues of notifications, iMessage and wireless sync at WWDC, hooks to speech technology were found lurking in iOS 5's "internal preferences."

ChronicWire posted a screenshot (pictured) that shows references to "Nuance Dictation" and "Nuance Long Endpoint" apparently within iOS' Internal SpringBoard preferences.

If true, this would certainly be good news. It means that truly integrated speech recognition will be coming to iOS 5, hopefully sooner rather than later.

It remains to be seen how Apple would expose the speech UI, but another screenshot (below) that recently leaked (via 9-to-5 Mac) suggests that Apple will add a Mic button on the iOS space bar.

This would be similar to how Android handles speech input:

But why wasn't SR hyped in iOS 5? My guess is that the Nuance deal (whatever it is) is taking longer to negotiate that Apple expected. Nuance is known to be a tough negotiator and it wouldn't surprise me if it was asking a king's ransom for the IP and that Apple was trying to pay less.

For the time being you're going to have to use Google Search and Dragon Search apps if you want speech recognition in iOS 4.x but it looks like some form of speech recognition will make it into iOS 5 in the not-too-distant future -- hopefully sooner rather than later.

    This is actually why my dad bought a new Android phone yesterday. He's in management and doesn't exactly have the time (or well, the patience) to type out a text. Fortunately, his new Samsung Infuse can have him sending paragraph long emails in record time with surprisingly high accuracy. I'm certain that he would have opted for an iPhone instead if it also had this functionality.

        @Peter Perry Simply because he's almost an invalid where technology is concerned. Something as simple as checking and sending email has a tendency to give him an aneurysm. Personally, I'd never touch an iPhone after using my Android, but you buy the device that fits you, not somebody else.

        More complete if you mean complete Google spyware. Otherwise, it is just another Google clunker.

      @Peter Perry
      Sure. It learns everything you say and passes it on to your Google profile. Just wait til that gets leaked.

        @jorjitop
Lol, haters gonna hate...

No seriously I really like the facts that your are giving to back up your arguments. (this seems to be typical behaviour for apple fanboys) -_-

Next time when you say nonsense, check it before. It is actually possible to work with an anonymous google profile without saving location information.. Everything will still work just fine. You can even block add servers if you are afraid of this.

Personally im not much of an conspiracy person and I am enjoying the google services, google never leaked information or invaded my privacy in any way. Sure there are negative things about google as a company, but you can say the same about microsoft, facebook, apple and many others. If you want true security you should use a blackberry..

      @Peter Perry And? This is a big revelation how? iOS not having decent speech recognition as part of the OS is a big revelation how? Honestly it's the ONLY thing I miss about WM - Microsoft had that nailed in the WM OS even if the rest of it sucked out loud.

      I was hoping that Apple would have had decent speech recognition integrated into the OS by now especially with that deal with Nuance. iOS does have speech recognition but it's not implemented very well - IMHO it's the one thing Apple has not done well in iOS.

    I don't care about either side of your pathetic fanboy arguments, and frankly no one else does either. I use iPhone because I like it. 150 million other people do too. And another 150 million use Android because they like it. And another 200+ million people use Nokia's Symbian because they like it. And so on. All i want to know is how do I access these settings panes? I already have iOS 5, so do I need a jailbreak or what? I wanna test, I'm addicted to testing, just like Chell, except the cake ISN'T a lie.

      I like cake, too. Especially fruitcake with plenty of rum in it.

    Speech recognition? well that is good, would be safer for users who are in the road driving and also for those who are working and may want to multi task. Speech recognition could lessen the time spent on sending or receiving messages.

    I love Apple devices and it would be a plus if SR is in iOS5. It's useful for people who doesn't have time or patience to type out a text like me esp. when I make grilled pork chops or catch up a business flights Canada or whenever I'm busy with my hair ceramic straighteners. I really want this Speech Recognition in iOS 5.
