iOS 4.1 coming this week; here’s a feature list

By | September 7, 2010, 5:55am PDT

Summary: At last week’s iPod event Steve Jobs said that iOS 4.1 would be released “next week.” A new post by 9 to 5 Mac describes all of the features in the new release.

At last week’s iPod event Apple chief Steve Jobs told the assembled media that he would release iOS 4.1 “next week.” Since most Americans took yesterday off to celebrate Labor Day, that leaves next for days for the big release – I’m guessing Friday.

If you can’t wait that long, 9 to 5 Mac has posted a complete iOS 4.1 walkthrough which describes all of the features in the new release.

HDR photography was the one new feature in iOS 4.1 that caught everyone completely off-guard because it was withheld from the three previous betas released to developers. Ironically, I wrote about Pro HDR last week, a $1.99 app that makes taking High Dynamic Range photos easy.

Other new features in iOS 4.1 include:

  • Bug Fixes (proximity, Bluetooth, iPhone 3G performance)
  • Enhanced Bluetooth audio playback
  • Game Center
  • HD Video Uploading
  • FaceTime in Phone Favorites
  • E-Mail Based FaceTime
  • Landscape Camera and FaceTime Call Controls
  • $.99 TV Show Rentals in iTunes
  • Ping support in iTunes
  • Disable Spell Check
  • FaceTime and Multiplayer/Game Center Restrictions
  • AT&T Carrier settings shift to version 8.0
  • Over the air Nike + Submissions
Jump over to 9 to 5 Mac for the complete descriptions and screenshots.
What 4.1 feature are you most looking forward to?

Performance fix for the iPhone 3g. That's #1 on my list (obviously, I own a 3g). HDR photos sounds nice, but I'm sure it won't be supported on my older phone.

By the way, Ping support is NOT a feature of the OS. It was rolled out on the iTunes store the day of the announcement last week and is already present for people running iOS 4.0.x. It may even be in place for those running 3.x, but I don't have a 3.x device and have no way of checking that.

  • 3G fixes
It will be interesting to see how Apple engineers salvage 3G performance. iOS 4 on the 3G has been truly atrocious, and I'm not sure how much of a gain they can wring out of 2 generations behind technology. If 4.1 does substantially improve the experience I'll be most impressed.

I haven't been following the iPhone 3G iOS 4 saga very closely but this article did find its way to me last week:
    http://lifehacker.com/5628991/iphone-3g-speed-test-ios-40-versus-ios-41

They concluded that 4.1 is faster than 4.0 but it is still slower than iOS 3. In other words, installing iOS 4 on a 3G is like installing Vista RTM on a P4 with 512MB of RAM.

Well done, you found an article made to measure for you: no benchmark, no serious measurements, 2 videos playing side by side. This what I call serious testing!

  • Disable features
It would be nice to disable (ideally remove) features in the OS. My 3G phone would be happier not having facetime (useless on the 3G eh?) or Nike+ etc.
And what's up with HDR? Still not convinced the iPhone is the right choice for taking any photos other than snaps to post to say FaceBook. I have a real camera with me 90% of the time... Regardless of my opinion on the matter, the more features they stuff in, the less I like it. Leave that to the app developers to extend, don't alienate them-oh right, Apple probably already is!

  • iOS 4.1 features
I'm looking forward to seeing better performance from iOS 4 on the iPhone 3G.

Better compatibility with Bluetooth headsets will be a plus...the normally good iPhone Bluetooth performance went downhill after the upgrade to iOS 4.

And that proximity sensor issue on the iPhone 4 is pretty ridiculous, so it deserves a fix as soon as possible too.
